Slice of Life: Unappreciated 29 of 31

This morning, I walked into the front room to sit in my usual spot by the windows with coffee in hand. The room felt a little chilly so I reached for the throw blanket which was just sitting there, folded, and waiting patiently for its next use. It occurred to me, at this moment, throw blankets are completely under-appreciated, yet I can't imagine life without them. In our house, you'll find one in the front room, three in the living room, and one on most of the beds. This made me start to think about the items in my life that are completely under-appreciated.

Under-appreciated Items

  1. Throw Blankets (see above): especially the really soft kind!
  2. Herb Scissors: Do you have these? If not, you need to go find them right now. They're divine.
  3. End Tables: My coffee is resting perfectly on one right now.
  4. Watering Can: Seriously! Without the watering can I'd have to drag our ginormous hose all around our yard!
  5. Toothbrush Stand: What if you toothbrush just had to sit in your cabinet or on your counter? Yuck! Thank goodness for the toothbrush stand.
  6. Newspaper: Digital or paper, newspapers are under appreciated. In this world of aggregated information sent our way the newspaper is the one way we can still manage the our information.
  7. Lemons: They're great in water, added to food or in scents. They smell clean and add just the right zest to a dish.
  8. Wristlet: Where were we before the wristlet? They allow us to grab just the essentials and go! They're easily stashed in bags and moved from spot to spot.
  9. Socks: There are so many kinds of socks: fun socks, extra warm socks, workout socks, slipper socks. They keep our feet warm and make our shoes more comfortable. We don't give them a thought - until we don't have them with us.
  10. Bookbags: We might be able to argue this one - especially in this community, but I think we take book bags for granted. Every trip to the library needs one. Think how often they help us get things to and from school! (Sometimes they work as longterm storage solutions. Ha! I don't recommend this.)
Let's face it. Some items get all the glory. We all know we couldn't live without the special plugs that charge our devices, power strips, and microwaves. We know the drink holders in our cars, the backpacks our kids use, and the phones we carry make our lives so much easier. Yet, there are so many things in our lives we take granted. Look around. What in your life is unappreciated and doesn't receive the props it should? These are items that make our life better that we just take for granted. I'd love to hear your additions to this list.

It's March and I'm diving back into the March Slice of Life Challenge!  Buckle in!  This will be my 8th year joining the community (though I must confess to a two year break).  Yep, some of the writing will be messy.  Honestly, most of it will be messy.  Thanks for stopping by.  I'm excited to dive back into the madness.  Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for hosting.

  1. I so enjoyed reading your list. I'll admit, I had to look up wristlet...I guess I don't shop enough but now may need to get me one. I love that lemons was on your list. I think I'd add windows. I love being able to see out and know what it is like before heading outside. But I do think I take this view for granted.

  2. What a wonderful idea for a slice! Lemons are an excellent addition to the list. I had to look up wristlets too and like Sally, now I need one! I'd add tongs--helpful for cooking and also helpful for grabbing items off of tall shelves that my husband can reach and I can't!

  3. Thank you so much for reminding us about these important, underappreciated items. As I read your post, I thought about each of these items. You're right! Thanks so much for sharing this Slice!

  4. Finding joy in the mundane and every day is always a delight! I noticed the conversational tone in your descriptions and I think that really works here; it gave this the feel of a porch conversation. Today, I'll make an effort to notice some of the small things!

  6. I’m fascinated by your list. I grew up poor and often think about all I have now. I’m grateful. In my adult life I’ve eschewed toothbrush holders. I don’t like storing a lot of things in the counter. I keep mine in a case in a vanity drawer. I think we take food for granted, or did until the pandemic. Americans waste a lot of focus. I take electronic conveniences like the garage door opener, microwave, and dishwasher for granted—until one breaks,

  7. I love this list- as I cuddle into my throw. Maybe I would add... a water bottle. A fun water bottle to sip from - yes please. Or...ohhhh.. a fun coffee mug.
