Poetry Friday: Summer Snow

Today was the first day I could really take a minute to sit back and relax.  It was beautiful here so I headed out to spend the day on my patio.  The wind whistled through the trees as the birds sang songs of summer.  The breeze continually carried white fluffy seeds (I think milkweed seeds) through the sky.  I thought I'd try to write a poem to capture the image.

Milkweed Seed
the milkweed seed
floats
in warm air.
fluffy puffs,
cottony white ,
gliding,
     dancing,
sailing,
     drifting,
gently to the ground.
covering the grass
in summer snow.

  1. We've got poplar fluff blowing around the neighborhood right now. I love your unexpected phrase--summer snow.

    1. It was something to watch it all day. The ground was covered. I tried spring snow as technically it is spring, but somehow summer snow sounded so much better.

  2. It might also be cottonwood tree fluff. No matter. You are right. It is summer snow!

    1. Hmmm. You bring up something to consider. I've never seen a cottonwood tree around here, but a little research shows the fluff to travel up to five miles. We must have been right in the wind path. ;o) It looked a bit like milkweed, but I thought I usually saw that more toward the fall and not nearly in such abundance. Your cottonwood seems a possibility. It's a poem of half truths --- it isn't technically summer either. LOL

  3. What a great way to describe it!!! I remember always seeing it float around.. We don't have that in the South, but we do have the dreaded pine pollen... How did you find the music for your little photo shoot??? You continue to impress me with your "techyness"!!
