The Quilt: Slice of Life Challenge 15 of 31

Slice of Life Challenge

Also joining the Poetry Friday round-up at Check It Out.  Stop by to read the beautiful biographical poem about Martin Luther King and much more.

Today is my sister-in-law, Lisa's birthday.  She's the quilter in the family so I wrote this for her.  Stop by her blog, Shreds of My Mind, to see some of her work.  Happy birthday, Lisa.

The Quilt
The quilter
Patiently
Stitches.
Joining fabric,
Shaping
The story.

Each piece
Unique.
Assorted colors.
Diverse patterns.
Together
More beautiful.

Each scrap
Collected from
A smaller story.
Marks a memory.
Stronger when
Stitched together.

Alone
They would be lost,
But with the deliberate hand
Of the quilter,
They warm
The world.

  1. I love the sparse lines, the idea that 'each scrap' is 'collected from smaller story.' And your last stanza is just - wow!

  2. I am copying this poem and sending it to my mother right this minute. Now I feel as if I should photograph some of her quilts and send you pictures or write about them next week. Her work hangs in nearly every room of my house--on walls, on beds--your poem brought her to mind. Thanks.

  3. What a lovely poem!

I love how your words are like "scraps" stitched together to create this quilt poem.

    Beautiful!

  4. Your words stitch a story for us just as the fabric of a quilt tells its story. What a beautiful poem for Lisa's birthday.

  8. This is why I am keeping the old family quilts -- so those stories (known and unknown) will not be lost.

    Lovely poem!!!
