Spring, Where Are You? Slice of Life 20 of 31

Spring, Where Are You?

The calendar says
today
is the day
you
arrive.

Yet,

when I step outside
a cold wind blows.
The grass is brown
and the sky
is the same gray
it has been
for months.

But the calendar
says you should be here.

I've seen you
peeking about,
in the green leaves
of the tulip
waking from its
winter sleep,
in the buds
waiting on the tips
of the dogwood's long fingers,
in the purple blooms
of the crocus
daring to be among
the early arrivals.

The calendar
tells me
it is time

for winter to say goodbye
and for you,
dear Spring,
to make your
entrance.

  1. This is great Cathy! Funny, my post was about Spring too. I think we are both sooooo ready for it! Great imagery...

  2. I've been thinking about a slice of this nature (ha ha) for a couple days now too. Spring is here according to the calendar, but it's freezing outside! Last year we were in the 80's - I know, an extreme exception. But heck, these days I'll take a misty 50 degree day!

    1. I just read the daily quote from Goodreads and it holds so much hope: "No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn." Hal Borland

  3. Winter just won't give up. I hope this means once spring arrives, it won't leave. I love free verse. I use this when I'm feeling whimsical and frustrated. It's a release of the soul.

  5. Ugh-I really like wearing cropped pants. Snow is coming by Friday, into Saturday. It's my spring break! Thanks for sharing the words we're all thinking, Cathy.

  6. Cathy-
So perfect! Last weekend I wore a sweatshirt when I walked the dog. I got all excited because we had had two days of warm weather and the crocuses were out and tulips were a couple of inches out of the ground. This morning, I did recess duty for an hour. The temperature was 27, and I bet with windchill, it was actually about 15. Brrr! Come on Spring! Carol

  7. Yes, it seems we are all wanting spring to really get here. I worry that my crocus will die...even though I know they are hardy and used to being teased by the illusive spring. It will arrive...it will arrive....but I did see the sun today! Jackie

  8. It was nothing like spring here yesterday either! I love the way your poem looks like a flower with a long stem and leaves and the picture/flower at the top. The line that includes 'buds' and 'dogwood' and 'long fingers' has such a good 'sound' to it.
