Slicing Together: Slice of Life Challenge 3 of 31

Slice of Life Challenge:  3 of 31
I'm not much of a pie baker, but I'm lucky enough to live close to Der Dutchman restaurants.  You can stop by there to get just a slice of pie or you can get an entire pie to go.  They have about any kind of pie you can imagine:  dutch apple pie, peach pie, sugar cream pie, chocolate peanut butter pie.  Whatever your favorite, they likely carry it.  There's nothing like enjoying a small piece of pie, but there's always something even better about bringing a whole pie to share a slice with everyone.

That's what has me excited about this year's Slice of Life Challenge.  In addition to staying connected with the slicers I discovered in last year's challenge, I have some of my friends and family joining me for the challenge.

Today I Love:  Trish E.
First Year Slice of Life
My undergraduate years in education were spent at The Ohio State University.  Trish and I took many classes together on our way to becoming educators.  As the years after graduation passed, we lost track of one another.  Responsibilities and small children have a way of making it hard to keep up with everyone.  Not too long ago we got back in touch with one another on Facebook.  It turns out we live hardly five miles from one another and have so many common interests (and now older kids).  For over 300 days now, Trish has been sharing something she has loved for the day.  She's spent her days finding something to be thankful for each day and writing a quick piece about it on Facebook.  She had decided she wanted to move these over to a blog for a variety of reasons and this seemed the perfect event to get started.  I'm so glad she's taken the dive.

Family Trove:  Jackie H.
First Year Slice of Life
Jackie is a retired educator from the district where I went to school and began my teaching career.  Though I didn't have her as a teacher, she was once my track coach.  As a constant advocate for students, teachers, and education, she was always (and still is) one of those teachers everyone knew, respected, and could count on to help.  When I started teaching she was the guidance counselor in the middle school were I taught sixth grade.  Two years ago, Jackie started a blog to work collaboratively with other family members and share stories of her family.  As a genealogist (by hobby not be trade), I was intrigued by her stories.  I was quite excited when she to decided to join this year's Slice of Life event.

Shreds of My Mind:  Lisa H.
Second Year Slice of Life
Last year, my sister-in-law, Lisa, decided to dive into the event with me.  We'd had several conversations about writing, blogging and this event.  She decided to jump in and join the fun.

Sunrise Where the Sun Shines:  Rob H.
Second Year Slice of Life
My brother, Rob, also decided this might be challenge worth some time.  Though he lives many many miles away it is nice to see his post pop up in my Google Reader.

Add to that local friends:  Literate Lives (Karen), Enjoy and Embrace Learning (Mandy), Nicole's Book Nook (Nicole), Raising Readers and Writers (Julie), and many colleagues from Twitter and other circles of learning (see my side bar).  You can see why it is so hard to keep up with all the reading!

Instead of enjoying one piece of pie by myself, this event has become like a social gathering with pieces of pie to share with everyone.  It's inspiring to be part of a community all on the quest for story, for words that help show some small part of the worlds we live in each day.  The world is full of stories; some just never get told.  Thanks to Stacey and Ruth, Two Writing Teachers, for hosting this event.

  1. I love reading and discovering connections between the different bloggers. What a web of connections you have. I have tried to inspire some in my circle of friends, but none have taken up the challenge. I think this is awesome!

  4. First you made me hungry for pie, then you inspired me with how you've inspired others. I love that you reconnected with a college friend through Facebook. It has some downsides, but finding old friends is definitely a plus. I also love that blogs and Twitter helps us to find new friends!

    1. Catherine,
I come from a small town. I've found Facebook to be a nice way to keep up with people I would otherwise lose track of in life. I also find it easier to talk with someone when I see them as I know so much about what has been happening in their lives. Most of all, I love the occasional old friend that reappears, the old student who contacts me, and the ability to keep up with my family.

  6. Cathy, I love that you've brought so many people along on the journey. You are an inspiration. I read a few of these blogs yesterday. I should have known that you had something to do with the newbies. :) Happy Sunday!!

    1. Lisa,
If you find some pie, could you bring it here? Better yet, some biscotti would be nice. I'd be willing to share.

  11. I'm so glad to read you create projects and momentum within our family and friends outside of our blogging/local pd group. Everyone should experience Cathy's ideas! Thanks for the shoutout, too. Now could you tell me how to set up the reply labels you have in blogspot? I will go and see if that's an option in my blog, I've been revamping over there.

  12. This is my favorite of your slice posts so far this year...although the pancakes and waffles come in second. (hmm...I'm hungry?) :-)

    Love these "slices!"
