One Little Word for 2025

Every year, when December rolls around, I begin the rhythms of reflection. Part of this process is starting to find the word that will guide me through the upcoming year. It's a combination of reflection, serendipity, and decision-making that guides me to the word I will use. 

Past Words

This year was no different. Early in the month, I began to collect words that showed up in my life. In the beginning, the list grew, and then it narrowed. As the end of 2024 neared, I found myself settling in on the word CURIOSITY. The upcoming year appeared sure to be filled with things beyond my control, so it seemed a stance of curiosity might be the best way forward. It was full of possibility and, as a questioner by nature, it felt comfortable. As we neared the year's end, another word whispered: TREASURE. I loved that the word could be a noun or a verb. It seemed versatile and optimistic. I found myself going back and forth.

Curiosity.

Though I loved both words, neither seemed exactly right.

One morning, I began to wonder if there was a word that was between curiosity and treasure. I decided to ask Google for a word whose meaning combined treasure and curiosity and was surprised to find several possibilities in the results. Immediately, however, the word MARVEL jumped off the page. I was immediately drawn to it. What's not to love?

I feel a bit like I found this year's word on "a dating app" by asking for exactly what I wanted. We shall see how it works out. The word marvel will allow me to be curious and ask the questions - to marvel. It will also allow me to find the treasures and gems...life's marvels. I can't wait to see where MARVEL will take me.
