4 of 30: Oh, To Be Seven Again

Today is my son's twentieth birthday (yes, I'm surprised I have a child that old too).  It's his freshman year at Toledo University; so unlike birthdays of the past, he has to attend classes all day and work until late tonight.  I'm sure he is missing birthdays when he was seven.

OH, TO BE SEVEN AGAIN
Remember when the
best day of the year was
your birthday!

Your friends at school ate cookies
and sang happy birthday to
you.

Cheeseburgers, pizza or macaroni.
The evening meal was whatever was chosen by
you.

Basketball, Pokemon, or a knight's shield.
The cake was the shape of
your latest obsession.

It took all of your might to blow out your candles
after everyone sang happy birthday to
you.

Your wrapping paper, a favorite superhero.
kept treasures hidden until opened by
you.

Transformers, legos, or an action castle.
You shouted with glee as you discovered what was chosen for
you.

Oh to be seven again,
when a birthday was all about
YOU!

  1. Love the poem and picture. It made me search my pictures to find one of John holding a kitten. Not sure if I can publish it on this comment...but will send it to you via email.

  2. Love the repetition of YOU! Because birthdays at seven were definitely all about you. I hope you are able to celebrate together soon!

    1. Thanks! I was just thinking about how exciting it was to be seven and have a birthday. I can remember hardly being able to sleep the night before. Birthdays then weren't the weeklong celebrations they have become, but they were every bit as amazing. John gets to come home tomorrow for the weekend. Looking forward to celebrating.

  3. I hope you sent this to your son. I imagine it would still the thought that counted, even though he is now 20! A sweet memory for you, too, and you captured that age so well, the crazy games, especially in adventure. I too like the repetition, the fact that seven is about 'you, you, you', and that's okay!

  4. Are you suggesting birthdays are no longer all about ME? I might beg to differ(*_*)

this is a great poem, I always love reading your writing, what a voice!
