13 of 30: My Lucky Day?

My Lucky Day?
My alarm buzzed loudly
as I put my left foot on the floor to begin my day.
Looking at the calendar I realized
it was Friday the 13th.
I smirked to myself.

Thinking it might rain
I grabbed my umbrella
popping it open in my foyer.
I stepped under the ladder
to get out the door.
My neighbor's black cat
crossed in front of me as I went to start my car.
The owl hooted three times
as he eyed me suspiciously.

I wrestled around my purse
looking for my keys.
I dropped my small mirror
and it shattered to pieces.

I was relieved to glance down
to find a FIVE leaf clover.
My luck is turning around.
Five has to be better than four.
Right?

  1. Cute poem! I know, I know . . . I hate describing anything but my girls as cute, but I really liked how you took all those superstitions and created this little masterpiece. I hope you had a great day with nothing but luck!

  2. Love it, Cathy. What a treat for this day, and I like the story quality of it. I've never heard of the three owl hoots superstition, but then, I've never lived where there might be three owl hoots!

    1. Linda,
The funny thing was I went to a few sites to read about superstitions and was cracking up at first. Then I realized if I really worried about these things I might night ever leave my house again. There were so many things: putting a hat on a bed, a picture falling, seeing an owl during daylight, spilling salt, spilling pepper. If you are bored go to bored.com/oldsuperstitions/bad_luck.html for a little chuckle.

  4. Lisa,
It apparently is bad luck to find a 5 leaf clover http://www.bored.com/oldsuperstitions/bad_luck.html. Can you believe it? Our first graders have been spending an entire recess looking for four leaf clovers. I'm pretty sure they would think they won the lottery if they found a five leaf clover.

  5. Too funny! I'd take the owl hooting three times as good luck. Three is a lucky number, right? And I'm pretty sure that Friday the 13th is a lucky day for Italians - or maybe my parents just told me that to keep me from freaking out every time one rolled around.
