12 of 30: Searching

"Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood."  T.S. Eliot

I searched for you today
in the crisp cool morning air surrounding me
the rising sun resting on the road before its ascent
the sounds of the birds awakening the sleeping world.

I tried to find you
in the tall blades of grass near the water's edge
the white blossoms on the tree lined roadway
the tulips bent over from the unexpected cold.

I listened for your voice
in the words that poured from the pages
     the conversations of passersby
the sound of people busily moving about their day.

It was impossible to see you
in the darkness of the night sky
the shadowy line where trees meet sky
the purple-blue clouds protecting the stars from my eyes.

Though I looked
you slipped away unnoticed
     I will search again...
          tomorrow.

  1. Wow, it can be about so many things Cathy-your muse, love, imagination (like the muse, I suppose), oneself. You certainly made me think about it. I liked that line "the purple-blue clouds protecting the stars from my eyes." I'm not sure that the clouds are good, although they seem pretty. Thanks, Cathy!

    1. Linda,
You have figured me out. I was looking for my poem, but thought we search for so much in our lives I'd leave it open to thought.

  2. Love this:
"the rising sun resting on the road before its ascent"

    Searching, searching...aren't we all? Always?

  3. Your words are beautiful. It sounds a little sad, wistful, yet hopeful. My favorite lines (probably because it's where I look) were I listened for your words that poured from pages...Keep searching always. :)

    1. You know how you write and write hoping there's a small fragment in there somewhere to use, or you read looking for something that sparks an idea.

  4. For someone who waited to post this until last night, this is an amazing poem!! Like Julie, I love the wistfulness of the waiting and searching. So many ways a reader could connect to this poem, depending on where you are in your own life. I am currently feeling like this as I try to find the remnants of my daughters each day, as they've gone off to live elsewhere for now.

    1. Karen,
I so relate. It is hard when our kids are no longer living with us. You go from chasing them around all day every day to having a lot of quiet time on your hands. It's amazing how quickly the time with them went, don't you think. We still have Cassie at home to entertain us. However, I think it is hard for her too with her brother and sister away. She's used to always having them here...and that's a lot of attention from mom and dad. ;o)

  5. I love this. This is what poetry is all about - leaving the interpretation open to the personal experience of the reader. I see you searching for your poem, but my first thought was that it was the search for the voice of a long lost loved one.

I love the structure of the lines, and the way they each step to the right. I love to play with the visual impact of my poetry, too :)
