SOLS #12: 10 Things I Wish I Didn't Have To Do

"If you’re going to be a writer, the first essential is just to write. Do not wait for an idea. Start writing something and the ideas will come. You have to turn the faucet on before the water starts to flow.Louis L’Amour

So I guess I'll just start writing...

Last night was Sunday.  I'd put off cleaning my house.  I'd put off doing laundry.  I'd put off doing lesson plans for the week.  For some reason, I spent the weekend obsessed with writing and reading blogs (hmmm, must be this slice of life insanity).  So, of course, when the afternoon started to turn to evening I put myself in high gear.  I was cleaning.  I had laundry going.  It's amazing what can get accomplished on a tight schedule.

I wasn't sure what I was going to write about and was beginning to worry about whether I would figure something out.  I was cleaning and thinking about writing ideas.  I wondered how many ideas I had missed in my day that might have worked.  Honestly, I was a bit grouchy.  Cleaning bathrooms is not my favorite thing to do.  "How many times have I cleaned bathrooms in my life?" I wondered.  "How many hours of my life had been spent doing this job I dislike so much?"  I decided I'd make a list of things I wish I didn't have to do.

10 Things I Wish I Didn't Have To Do
  1. Go outside when it is below freezing.
  2. Sort through piles of mail in which most of it is junk.
  3. Fill out paperwork for my kids at the beginning of the school year.
  4. Clean bathrooms.
  5. Fold laundry.  I mean, you just take it out to wear it anyway.
  6. Wake up to an alarm clock.
  7. Complete tax forms.
  8. Straighten my crazy hair in the morning.  It takes forever.
  9. Clean dog accidents.
  10. Remind my children to pick up and do their chores.
What do you wish you didn't have to do?

  1. Aw, man, there are so many things. Hmm. Grading would sometimes be on that list. Taking finals and writing papers for grad school. Fly anywhere ever again - can't I just blink my eyes like Jeanie? Work out. ;)

  2. Love the quote from L'Amour: "You have to turn on the faucet before the water flows." You did a great job of letting the words flow - it's a slice! Love the narrative with the list too. I wish I didn't have to grocery shop, clean bathrooms, or iron.

  3. Great list Cathy! I love the way you ask yourself the questions about 'how many times.' Thanks for confirming what we all believe!

  4. You expressed my angst perfectly. I spent yesterday cleaning (on March Break this week) and it was about time! The dustbunnies were having grandchildren. My list would be similar to yours except I'd change 'dog' to 'cat.'
