SOLS #10: 10 Ways to Procrastinate Your Writing

"Writing is 90 percent procrastination:  reading magazines, eating cereal out of a box, watching infomercials.  It's a matter of doing everything you can to avoid writing, until it is about four in the morning and you reach a point where you have to write."  Paul Rudnick.  From Writers on Writing:  Overcoming Writer's Block

On this 10th day of the Slice of Life Challenge what better topic than procrastinating writing?  I'm the queen of procrastination so here the ten ways I suggest you procrastinate:

  1. Log in to Pinterest maybe you'll find some ideas there
  2. Check out the #slice2012 Twitter feed
  3. Read the posts of other slicers (this is called positive procrastination)
  4. Eat Girl Scout cookies
  5. Read a book
  6. Call a friend or family member to catch up
  7. Take a nap
  8. Go through your DVR and catch up on all the sitcoms for the week
  9. Write silly lists like this
  10. Clean your house (only if you are desperate to avoid writing)
I hope you'll share your favorite way to procrastinate.

  1. Too funny, Cathy! I did a fair bit of #4 today and it was a very 'positive procrastination' experience. Love #10 but did none of that today. Thanks for the chuckles.

    1. Mardie,
I think #4 may be one of my favorites right now. I'm glad to hear you avoided #10 today.

  2. I do all of those things to procrastinate writing. It's really hard to write everyday but I do love the challenge.

    1. Nicole,
It is hard to write every day. I have a new admiration for the work my students do with ease. I'm learning from them. The challenge has been a great way for me to get back into the habit of writing. It helps to have so many people cheering each other on to the finish.

  3. I could write ten ways to avoid housecleaning and the list would look very similar to this!

    1. Carol,
I am right there with you! Believe me, if I get to #10 things have gotten desperate and I'm really avoiding some work.

  4. I don't know. Don't you think #10 is going just a bit too far? Ha ha!

    1. You are right, Jama. I need to be careful not to get to that point.

  5. Love this! I just wrote my slice for tomorrow and it's a top ten list as well. :) My favorite way to procrastinate depends on what I'm doing. To procrastinate from writing it tends to be Twitter and reading other posts since I'm already at the computer.

    1. Katherine,
I love lists! I'll look forward to reading your list on day #11.

  6. I love your list! I've done it all - except #10! Ugh . . .which reminds me, I got up with the intention of putting the laundry away and starting a new load. So, I guess I'm violating procrastination #3. Glad I did!

  7. Heh. Too funny!

Twitter tends to me my "fall back" procrastinator. Though I also use it as fodder for many of my posts. I should put exercise on that list, but it would be mostly a lie.

  8. I do like the one about girl scout cookies. Problem is I'm out!

  9. I'm with the others on #10, however, is #6 why you called me? : ) Thanks for a great list! Your slices are definitely entertaining.

  10. I am reading your slices right now to avoid writing. I want to write, I can't wait to write, but getting started is somehow fearful.
