Day 6 SOL 16: Little Surprises

You'd think by now, most of life's surprises would have been experienced.  Yet, I find, there are still moments of surprise that make me smile.  There are still so many things I haven't learned.  In most any day, I can find a small little moment that surprised me or taught me something new.

Today I sauntered to the kitchen to get a salad ready for Sunday dinner with some family.  I opened the refrigerator, grabbed the lettuce, gathered some vegetables, and got ready to chop.  Before getting started,  I wanted to boil some eggs for the salad.  I reached to the top shelf and grabbed the egg crate neatly bundled from my recent purchase.  These eggs had been purchased from a friend whose sister raises chickens.

Placing the carton on the counter I opened it to find the eggs were a variety of colors.  Though growing up I only knew of white eggs, brown eggs have become my go-to in the last few years as I've moved to intentionally selecting cage-free eggs.  It seems eggs produced by local chicken farmers are more often brown.

Today, however, I was greeted with a fun surprise.  One of the eggs had a bluish tint.  My friend's sister had told me I might have a different colored egg as she had a chicken that produced colored eggs.  The chicken is called an Easter Egger, I believe.  I couldn't bring myself to put the egg into the boiling water.  It seemed like it should be saved for a grander purpose - maybe a batch of biscotti or a breakfast omelet.

Often we let these little moments slip through our fingertips.  Today reminded me to more often keep my eyes open for those little moments of sweet surprise.

For the month of March I will be participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge hosted at Two Writing Teachers.  It will be a busy month of writing, commenting, and learning with this community.  Stop by today's link up to join the conversation or find some great reading.

  1. My great niece had a chicken who laid colored eggs. I visited her in TN this summer and it was a delightful surprise! I'd never seen them before.

  2. What a cool surprise! And what a great way to remember to not let the little moments slip through our pictures. We only buy cage free eggs, too. I began buying brown eggs when my mother started having vision problems and could not tell if she had peeled all of the shell from the egg. (We had a few crunchy scrambled eggs before I realized what was happening.)

  3. That's really cool! Although, if you think you have run out of opportunities to be surprised, need I remind you that you work with children and have children of your own? Silly Cathy! There are so many surprises in store for you I can't wait to see them all!
