Slice of Life: Little Wins 27 of 31

Coffee. Glorious coffee.

Dad and I used to go out for coffee periodically. We would sit in crowded coffee shops on Saturday mornings, enjoying a delightful cup of goodness. Since COVID we haven't been able to do that. Though we live two miles apart, we have spent the last year visiting on Zoom and saying hello at the door during food exchanges. With three teachers in our house, we didn't want to take a chance of bringing COVID to my dad so coffee became one of the many things we have missed.

We were pretty excited to head out this week for our return to a coffee shop. I think somehow we both expected the coffee shop had never changed, but the pandemic changed it too. There were no tables out. No crowds sitting and chatting. Instead, we waited in a socially distanced line marked off by the shop to order. We were not able to sit inside, but were lucky to score a table in front of the shop (which would have been my preference anyway).

This coffee shop does not have a drive-thru so I have not had a cup of their coffee in well over a year. Imagine my excitement to enjoy a Buckeye Latte (peanut butter and chocolate - don't knock it until you try it). Dad and I sat there for over an hour just watching the people go by, chatting, and enjoying the morning. All things I took for granted over a year ago.

Things certainly aren't back to normal, but I'm going to call the visit to this coffee shop a little win!

It's March and I'm diving back into the March Slice of Life Challenge!  Buckle in!  This will be my 8th year joining the community (though I must confess to a two year break).  Yep, some of the writing will be messy.  Honestly, most of it will be messy.  Thanks for stopping by.  I'm excited to dive back into the madness.  Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for hosting.

  1. Fantastic!! I love how you presented the tradition of coffee with your dad against the backdrop of all that has changed. (and I am fully intrigued by the notion of a Buckeye Latte!)

  2. I also enjoy getting coffee with my dad! Life certainly is about the little wins! That coffee sounds super delicious too. Some traditions should never change. :-)

    1. I think we've all learned to appreciate so many simple things we took for granted. Lesson learned (so can we leave this pandemic madness...ha!).

  4. Coffee. An hour people watching with someone I love. It's these little sweetnesses that I miss the most. Here's to lots more times together. Although I'm not sure about your choice of coffee. Peanut butter in coffee??? Hmmmm....

  5. I'm so glad that you and your dad were able to get out and share a coffee date!!! I could almost smell the coffee and hear your voices.. I think we all have a new appreciation for the "little" things.

  6. I enjoyed reading this so much and living vicariously through your coffee shop visit. Since I got vaccinated I was thinking about a coffee shop visit, but with Covid cases soaring here in Detroit, I decided it was safer and wiser to stay home a bit longer. But I cannot WAIT!
