Slice of Life: Priorities

Today I am participating in the Slice of Life Tuesday Challenge.  Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for hosting.

Priorities
I went into school this morning to start to move from my first grade classroom into a small room for reading intervention.  I'm excited about the change, but not as excited about figuring out what to do with all of the stuff I have collected.  I went in at 8 o'clock his morning and worked until it was well past dark.  After putting in over 12 hours, I had decided jumping back into Slice of Life could wait until next week.

Then I stopped by Kidblog and saw that Maggie had posted today.  Our class had discussed posting on Tuesdays over the summer since we enjoyed the month long challenge in March.  She had written a poem about the beach.  I decided if she could find time to write, I would too.  Thanks, Maggie, for reminding me of what is important.

I'm going to follow Maggie's lead and write a poem about moving.

Moving

Stacks of books
line the tables
the shelves
the floor
beginning to fill boxes.

Round trashcans
full
filled with items
well used
or long outdated

Markers
pens
papers
learning tools
cover table tops.

What should go home?
What will fit in the office?
What do I need?
What should be passed along?
Priorities.

  1. This poem describes my situation right now too. I may be moving grades and schools so I really did not know how to pack up my room. What stays? What goes? And books everywhere! I hope you move was what you wanted - I loved and shared many of the things you did in 1st grade. Good luck with the packing!

  2. There has been more than one person posting about moving, Cathy. Best wishes to you in the choosing. I moved out 4 years ago, & am lately purging what I kept-too many that aren't being used! If you can find it, read Karen Terlecky's post about what she did with her books-very nice, too.

  3. I love that Maggie encouraged YOU to write! Priorities, even after a long day of organizing, throwing out, packing up, you still wrote.

  4. Maggie is my hero! I am actually scheduling writing time for the next few weeks so that I don't let it become the thing I didn't do in these first very busy days of summer.
Like you, figuring out what stays, goes, or should belong to someone else has been quite an adventure. Can't wait to see you and hear more about the new job! Best of luck as you finish up this very difficult job.

  5. I love this poem! It aptly describes what so many of us are going through. The chaos before organization reigns can be daunting.
